GOING AGAINST THE FLOW

Heading upstream, now in Stevenson. Tiny town of 1500 souls. Took a day trip out to the Pacific NW. Beautiful here, sweeping valleys, miles & miles of orchards. Started at the dam and falls.  It's someone's job to count the salmon up the fish ladder. they sit in a window under the ladder - 1,2,3...... 491, damn, fell asleep & have to start again, send em back round. Had Thanksgiving dinner at the Grange (how time flies) The Grange sounded pretty swanky to me, but it's Nation farmers self help organisation, bit like our farmer's union crossed with the WI. So we had lunch in a shed with magnificent home cooking. The fruit pies were to die for. On up to My Hood, all year round skiing, snow still up to the 1st floor. Timberline Lodge was built in the 30's as a project to give people work in the depression. A couple of skilled people and a squad of unemployed on 40cents an hour. One guy had to prepare whole tree trunks to make the main supports. Paid 25 bucks per trunk an did 6 in two weeks. They carved all the wood, painted the artwork, forged their own ironwork, made all the furniture. It took 18 months to finish and it is magnificent.
